Virginia Magistrate Judge, William Fitzpatrick, ordered Nathan Lalatsch, 28, to be awaiting a detention audience scheduled for June 4.
Laatsch allegedly sought to convey national defense information or documents classified to a foreign government.
According to the details of the case, Lalatsch faces “any term or years, or life … or even death”, according to the DOJ prosecutor, Gordon Kromberg.

Lalatsch, a computer specialist used by the Defense Intelligence Agency (day) since 2019, appeared in court on Friday with street clothes, which was allegedly the same clothes he wore when he was arrested the day before.
He was arrested after the FBI received a tip in March that someone was willing to provide classified information to a friendly foreign government.

An email to the FBI said that the person, later identified as Lalatsch, disagreed or aligning with the values of the Trump administration and would be willing to share classified information that could be accessed, including “completed intelligence products, some non -processed intelligence and other varied classified documentation”.
Lalatsch communicated with an FBI agent, who believed he was a foreign government official, several times and would confirm that he was willing to share classified information that transcribed a notebook to his desktop, said the DOJ. He allegedly exiled the information on his workspace several times for a period of three days in preparation.
The FBI established an operation in a North Park in Virginia, where Laatsch had to deposit classified information “for the foreign government to recover,” according to the DOJ. The FBI was observed on May 1 or around depositing an item at the specified location.

Once left, the DOJ said that the FBI agents recovered a thumb unit in the area containing a message from Laatsch and several typed documents with information marked by portions for secret or secrets levels. His message allegedly indicated that he shared “a decent sample size” of the information classified to demonstrate the types of things he has access to.
On May 7, after Lalatsch learned that the thumb unit had been recovered, he allegedly sent a message to the covert agent who seemed to say that he was looking for something in exchange for providing the information.
The next day, he specified that he was interested in “citizenship for your country” because he did not expect things in America to “improve in the long term,” the DOJ said. He allegedly also said that “he did not oppose other compensation”, but not in a place where he needed “material compensation”.
